Mobile ramp (mobile loading ramp) AUSBAU – metal construction in the form of an inclined platform, which balances out the difference between ground/warehouse surface and truck body. It significantly speeds up unloading and loading processes in the warehouse.

Mobile loading ramp allow you to significantly speed up the process of goods loading and unloading at the warehouse. Unlike stationary dock ramps, you can freely move them around the warehouse and far beyond with the help of the built-in transport base, which is a significant advantage.

MOVABLE DOCK RAMP OPERATING PRINCIPLE

The forklift lifts the edge of the ramp (there is a special place for a rigid coupling grasp) and brings it to the truck. Using manual hydraulics, one person presses the hydraulic pump handle and sets the required height of the ramp (from 900 mm to 1,650 mm).

After installation, the mobile loading ramp is securely fastened to the truck with two chains, and the wheels are fixed by chocks (chains and wheel chocks come complete with a ramp). Then the loaded forklift comes up the mobile ramp and goes directly into the truck or container.

Thus, one forklift driver is enough to carry out all loading and unloading operations. So you don’t need the worker who used to pull the loads with a trolley from/to the edge of the truck.

As a result, our mobile loading ramp significantly speeds up the loading and unloading processes, saves labor costs, optimizes logistic processes and increases profits.

1. What is a loading ramp?
A mobile loading ramp is a metal structure that allows a forklift to safely drive from ground level into a truck, van, 20- and 40-foot container, or railway wagon without the construction of a stationary ramp. Depending on the model, the working height of AUSBAU ramps is adjustable in the range from 900 to 1750 mm, which allows them to service most types of freight transport.

AUSBAU mobile ramps are used for operations with trucks, LCVs, containers, and railway wagons in locations where a stationary ramp or dock leveler is absent. Standard models are manufactured with a load capacity of 6, 8, 10, and 12 tons, while ramps with a load capacity of up to 50 tons are produced for non-standard tasks.

2. What types of loading ramps are there?
Loading ramps differ in design, installation method, and field of application. Each type of ramp is designed to solve specific logistics tasks – loading and unloading trucks, containers, light commercial vehicles, or organizing a permanent loading zone in a warehouse.

Main types:
  • mobile ramps – provide flexibility and the ability to quickly move between loading zones, allowing operations in different locations without being tied to a stationary platform;
  • mobile ramps for containers – for working with 20- and 40-foot containers placed on container chassis or long platforms;
  • mobile and stationary ramps for vans and light commercial vehicles – designed for loading and unloading transport with a low body height when a standard loading ramp is not suitable based on its working height;
  • stationary dock ramps – for enterprises with a permanent loading zone and high work intensity;
  • custom-designed loading ramps – manufactured taking into account the required load capacity, dimensions, type of transport, and operating conditions.
3. What should the height of loading ramps be?
The working height of a mobile loading ramp is selected depending on the body height of the transport being serviced. This determines the height at which the ramp will dock with the vehicle body and ensures the safe entry of a forklift.

When making a selection, the following values are typically considered:
  • low-bed semi-trailers – 900-1000 mm;
  • standard trucks and curtain-sided semi-trailers – approximately 1200 mm;
  • 20- and 40-foot containers on a container chassis – approximately 1300 mm;
  • railway wagons – 1250-1400 mm for the 1st level, 2950 mm for the 2nd level.

If the ramp is used for various types of transport, the adjustment range must cover their required min. working height and max. working height. AUSBAU mobile loading ramps feature hydraulic adjustment of the working height from 900 to 1750 mm, allowing operations with most types of freight transport.
4. How wide should the loading ramp be?
The width of a loading ramp is determined by the dimensions of the forklift, the size of the transported cargo, and the required lateral clearance for the safe movement of equipment. The standard usable width of AUSBAU mobile ramps is 2000 mm. This is suitable for most forklifts, electric forklifts, stackers, and other warehouse equipment used in typical loading and unloading operations.

When selecting the width, it is necessary to consider:
  • the overall width of the forklift;
  • the width of the cargo and attachments;
  • sufficient side clearance on each side of the forklift for safe movement;
  • the ability for straight-line entry and trajectory adjustment.

For large warehouse, construction, or special equipment, AUSBAU can manufacture a ramp with an increased usable width of up to 2820 mm.
5. What standards apply to loading ramps?
Loading ramps must meet stringent requirements for strength, stability, and operational safety. All AUSBAU mobile ramp models are designed with the following features:
  • robust steel structure designed for the stated load capacity;
  • anti-slip grating riding surface for reliable wheel traction;
  • entry bridges for the smooth and safe access of the forklift onto the ramp from ground level;
  • strong connecting lip for the secure docking of the ramp to the vehicle body;
  • side barriers to prevent equipment from driving off the edge;
  • chain fixation device and chain with hook, alongside wheel chocks, for securely anchoring the ramp in place;
  • hydraulic system featuring hydraulic cylinders, an oil tank, and a pump with a handle for smooth adjustment of the working height;
  • optimal driveway width and slope angle for the safe movement of the forklift;
  • tow pole for ramp moving and sturdy wheels for safely relocating the ramp across the enterprise territory.

For additional security, AUSBAU ramps can be customized with safety railings, adjustable support legs, and other protective elements based on specific operating conditions.
6. How to calculate the required load capacity of a loading ramp?
The load capacity of a loading ramp is determined by the total weight of the forklift and the transported cargo. When choosing, it is also recommended to consider a safety margin of at least 10% and the possible replacement of warehouse equipment in the future.

For example, if a forklift weighs 4 tons, the maximum cargo weight is 2 tons, and the safety margin is 10%, the recommended load capacity of the ramp will be at least 7-8 tons. In this case, the optimal choice would be a mobile ramp with a load capacity of 8 tons.

Standard AUSBAU mobile ramps are manufactured with a load capacity of 6, 8, 10, and 12 tons, while models up to 50 tons are produced for non-standard tasks.

7. What is the recommended slope angle for a loading ramp?
The slope angle of a loading ramp must ensure the safe entry of a forklift both with and without a load. A loaded forklift typically has higher tire traction with the ramp surface, whereas an empty one may have less, so both operating modes must be considered.

When selecting the slope angle, the following is considered:
  • the type and clearance of the equipment/transport, as well as other technical characteristics of the transport/equipment that will move along the ramp;
  • the maximum allowable slope specified by the manufacturer of the forklift or other type of equipment;
  • the type, weight, and stability of the transported cargo;
  • the operating conditions of the ramp, in particular, the surface on which the ramp will be placed.

For long, heavy, or unstable loads, a gentler entry is recommended. When working in open areas, weather conditions are also taken into account: at low temperatures, tire traction may deteriorate, and wear increases when moving up steep inclines. To protect the working area from precipitation, the AUSBAU mobile ramp can be additionally equipped with a tent cover over the ramp, mountable, making loading and unloading operations in open areas safer and more comfortable. During the design of AUSBAU mobile loading ramps, the characteristics of the forklift and cargo, as well as operating features, are taken into account, which allows choosing the optimal ramp model.
