Movable dock ramp operating principle

Fixed loading dock ramps with horizontal platform are installed in front of the dock gate or on an open level surface. They provide a non-stop and free access from ground level to the warehouse or truck.

Horizontal platform of the AUSBAU stationary loading ramps allow the forklift driver to level off its position before arriving at or leaving the warehouse or truck. Thus, the forks will be parallel to the ground and the driver will get a full view.

AUSBAU stationary loading dock ramps are securely fixed with bolts (to the warehouse) or chains (to the warehouse or truck). The connecting bridge is made of ultrastrong steel with a lentil pattern surface coating. It acts as a matching link between the ramp and the object.

1. What is a loading ramp for trucks?

A loading ramp for trucks is a metal structure that ensures the movement of a forklift between ground level and the level of a truck bed, semi-trailer, or warehouse area. It compensates for the height difference and allows organising loading and unloading operations without building a permanent loading dock.

For a permanent loading area, a loading dock ramp with a horizontal platform can be used. It consists of an inclined part for the forklift to ascend and a horizontal section before the docking point. On this section, the forklift levels off its position, ensuring a more controlled entry into the truck or warehouse.

The design of a fixed loading ramp is selected based on the working height, load capacity, forklift characteristics, the type of transport being serviced, and the required slope.

2. What are the different types of truck ramps?

The choice of a loading ramp depends on the company's tasks, the type of transport, and the organisation of the loading area. The main types are:

ST – a classic fixed loading ramp for the regular loading and unloading of trucks using forklifts. It provides direct access for equipment between ground level and the loading area;
STB – a fixed ramp with a horizontal platform of 2500 mm in length. The platform allows the forklift to level off its position after ascending before arriving at the warehouse or truck bed; if necessary, its length can be increased;
DG – a "warehouse-ground" fixed ramp for the movement of loading equipment between the warehouse level and the adjacent territory;
VR – a loading ramp for vans and light commercial vehicles. It compensates for the height difference between a standard loading dock and the lower LCV truck bed;
custom ramps – these are designed if the standard dimensions, working height, or design do not match the equipment, site, or technological process of the company.

3. When is a fixed loading ramp with a horizontal platform required?

The horizontal platform is especially useful:

when working with heavy, long, or unstable loads;
when it is necessary to level off the position of the forklift and/or load before entry;
during intensive loading and unloading operations;
when the loading area configuration requires an additional horizontal section;
for greater safety and a full view for drivers before leaving the loading ramp for the truck/warehouse;
for unloading container trucks.

The standard platform of the AUSBAU-STB loading dock ramp has a length of 2500 mm; if necessary, its dimensions can be increased or decreased according to the equipment used and working conditions.

4. What safety measures are required on a loading ramp?

The horizontal platform allows the forklift to fully level off its position after ascending the inclined part of the loading ramp before arriving at the warehouse or truck bed. This is especially important when working with heavy, long, and unstable loads.

On the horizontal section:

the forklift and load are in a level position;
it is easier for the operator to control the load position and the distance to the entry point;
the need for manoeuvring on the inclined part is reduced;
the transition from the ramp to the warehouse or truck bed becomes smoother and more controlled.

5. What angle of a loading ramp for trucks?

The slope angle of the ramp depends on the working height, the length of the inclined part, and the characteristics of the forklift used. The longer the inclined part at the same working height, the gentler the ascent.

For the standard AUSBAU-STB fixed loading ramp, two options are available:

inclined part 8000 mm – slope angle 8.63°;
inclined part 10000 mm – slope angle 6.89°.

A gentler ascent may be a better option for intensive operations, heavy or less stable loads, and equipment with limitations on the permissible incline. When choosing a loading ramp, it is necessary to consider the maximum permissible slope angle specified by the forklift manufacturer.
